Duwisib Castle is a historical site and national monument, as well as a convenient stopover when travelling to or from the popular Sesriem and Sossusvlei areas. Built by the German Baron von Wolf for his bride in the early 1900s, the castle offers visitors a glimpse of German colonial times. It houses a museum with artifacts from this extravagant era, shipped from Germany to South West Africa, as Namibia was then known.
Replete with history and romance, Duwisib Castle was a dream turned into reality for Baron von Wolf, who had planned on breeding horses in this semi-desert environment. Sadly, he was killed during the First World War. His wife left for America, never to return, leaving the castle and all of its contents and dreams behind.
There are five rooms located inside Duwisib Castle itself — Alfa, Bravo, Charli, Delta and Echo. Each room has two three-quarter beds, mosquito nets, an en-suite shower, a tea/coffee station and wardrobes.
For that special occasion, request the Baron's Room — offering facilities similar to the standard rooms, but with a large king size bed in place of the two single beds.
Duwisib Castle is closed for overnight stays until further notice, but remains open as a historic day-visit destination. It's an ideal stopover for visitors en route to the south of Namibia, combining colonial history, architecture and a glimpse of one of the country's most unusual stories.
