Previously known as Mile 14, this camp sat closed for nine years before NWR reopened it — significantly upgraded — as Windpomp 14. It sits directly on the beach on the Skeleton Coast, north of Swakopmund, where the cold Atlantic breaks onto one of the world's most atmospheric coastlines. The Benguela Current keeps the air cool and the fish plentiful, making this one of the best shore-fishing destinations in southern Africa.
Each campsite has its own private hot shower, flush toilet, fridge, gas plate, and braai pit — a level of per-site comfort that sets Windpomp 14 apart from most NWR camps. The beachfront row is the most sought after, with the Atlantic just steps away. The Fisherman's Pub and Grill keeps everyone fed and watered, and the camp works just as well for families wanting a Skeleton Coast experience as it does for serious anglers.
Campsites at Windpomp 14 are laid out in three rows facing the Atlantic. The beachfront row puts you directly on the shore and books out first — request it specifically when enquiring. Middle and back row sites are slightly more sheltered from the coastal wind. All three rows are proper, well-equipped sites: not just a pitch and a tap, but a genuinely self-contained camping unit.
Every single site — regardless of row — includes a private hot shower, flush toilet, wash basin, sink, gas plate, fridge, 220V power, caravan adaptor, braai/fire pit (bring your own grill), light, and rubbish bin. The level of per-site infrastructure is exceptional for an NWR property.
The Skeleton Coast is one of the world's most dramatic coastlines — a long, wind-scoured stretch of cold Atlantic shore where the Benguela Current pushes nutrient-rich water up from the deep, creating exceptional fishing conditions and an atmosphere unlike anywhere else in Africa. Fog rolls in from the sea in the mornings, pelicans patrol the shoreline, and the roar of the surf is a constant backdrop. Windpomp 14 puts you right on it.
Swakopmund is close by for supplies, restaurants, and activities — quad biking, skydiving, and dune boarding are all available from town. But the real draw here is the coast itself: the fishing, the birds, the cold beer at the Pub and Grill after a day on the beach.
The Fisherman's Pub and Grill is the social hub of Windpomp 14 — a relaxed beachside pub serving cold drinks and light meals. Very popular with guests and anglers alike, it is the kind of place where a quick drink after a morning of fishing tends to stretch into the afternoon. A small kiosk at the camp stocks sweet treats, a few essentials, and a small selection of curios for those who need a last-minute souvenir of the Skeleton Coast.
