There are few places on earth that match Terrace Bay for raw, undisturbed coastal drama. Set inside Skeleton Coast National Park amid the sand dunes of the northern Namib Desert, the resort sits directly on the Atlantic where the cold Benguela Current pushes up a vast diversity of fish — kabeljou, steenbras, galjoen and more. Terrace Bay caters for a maximum of 50 guests at any time, deliberately limiting numbers to protect the environment and enhance the wilderness experience.
The resort is run entirely on generator, which operates in the mornings and from late afternoon — a reminder of just how remote this place is. The Uniab River Delta is close by for hiking, bird watching, and game viewing. Sundowners on the dunes as the light turns the Atlantic gold are not something you forget easily.
Twenty comfortable rooms line the front of the resort, each facing the beachfront with the Atlantic beyond. Rooms sleep up to 2 adults and include an ensuite bathroom with towels and bedding — duvets provided for the cold, windy nights on this stretch of coast. Breakfast is included in the room rate, and evening meals are served in the restaurant. Lunch is only available by prior arrangement, so plan accordingly. The bar is a welcome fixture after a day on the beach.
Two beach chalets provide self-catering accommodation for larger groups — one sleeps up to 10 guests (minimum 5), the other up to 8 (minimum 4). These are in high demand and book out well in advance, particularly during the fishing season. Each chalet is fully equipped for self-catering: hob, fridge, crockery, and all cooking utensils. An outdoor braai area is available when the coastal wind cooperates. Full access to the resort's restaurant and bar is included.
These chalets are ideal for fishing groups, families or friends travelling together. Book as early as possible — availability is extremely limited given only 2 units exist at the entire resort.
The restaurant at Terrace Bay serves breakfast (included in room rates) and evening meals. Lunch is available by prior arrangement only — let reception know in advance if you need it. The bar is a natural gathering point, particularly in the evenings after fishing. A small shop stocks basic supplies, and there is a limited supply of petrol and diesel on site — a critical resource this far along the coast.
The entire resort runs on generator. Power is on during the morning until after breakfast, then off during the day, and back on in the late afternoon. Plan your charging accordingly. A fishing licence from the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources must be obtained before entering the park.
The cold Benguela Current running offshore is the engine behind Terrace Bay's reputation as one of the finest shore-fishing destinations in southern Africa. Kabeljou, steenbras, galjoen and surf sharks are all found here. Bring everything you need — there is no tackle or fishing equipment shop on site. Obtain your fishing licence from the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources before entering the Skeleton Coast Park.
Beyond fishing, the nearby Uniab River Delta offers hiking, bird watching, and game viewing in genuine wilderness. Sundowners from the dunes are a highlight. This is a destination where the landscape and the silence are as much the attraction as the fishing itself.
