Olifantsrus is the latest tourist camp to open in Etosha National Park and the first — and only — accommodation option in the park to offer a camping-exclusive experience. Situated in the wilder, more remote, and previously less-visited western section of the park, it offers a genuinely raw encounter with the African bush.
The camp is approximately 60 km from Galton Gate, 130 km from Okaukuejo, and 50 km from Dolomite Camp. Its name — Olifantsrus, meaning Elephant's Rest — speaks to the area's most iconic visitors, who congregate at the camp's famous double-storey waterhole hide in remarkable numbers.
Ten individual campsites, each with shade and access to one power point, set in the remote western section of Etosha. Shared facilities include a communal kitchen and communal bathroom blocks. This is camping as it should be — immersed in the sights, sounds and smells of the untouched African bush.
The standout attraction of Olifantsrus is its remarkable double-storey hide overlooking a busy waterhole. The lower floor faces directly onto the water at eye level — ideal for photography — while the open upper level surveys the savannah beyond. Elephants are the waterhole's most frequent visitors, arriving in large numbers. Black rhino and black-faced impala — both rare and shy species well-established in this part of Etosha — are regularly sighted here too.
Olifantsrus is open to day visitors until 16:00, allowing enough time to reach Galton Gate before the park closes at sunset. An entry fee is payable at reception. Day visitors can make use of the picnic area, access the hide, visit the information centre, and purchase drinks at the kiosk.
Olifantsrus is for travellers who want Etosha without the crowds. The western section sees a fraction of the visitors of the central camps, and the wildlife — including large herds of elephant at the waterhole hide — is no less spectacular. Bring your own grill if you plan to cook over a fire; braai stands are not provided, only flat fire bases.
The camp operates strictly from sunrise to sunset in line with park regulations. There are no braai (BBQ) stands — guests who wish to cook over a fire must bring their own grill. Day visitors must exit by 16:00 to reach Galton Gate before park closure.
